About & History of AMD

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was founded on May 1, 1969, by Jerry Sanders and seven colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor. Initially operating as a second-source manufacturer for microchips, AMD quickly gained traction by focusing on high-quality memory chips and logic circuits. A pivotal moment occurred in 1982 when AMD signed a cross-licensing agreement with Intel to serve as a second-source supplier of x86 processors for IBM PCs. This foundation allowed AMD to transition into designing proprietary x86 processors, culminating in the 1996 release of the K5 and the ground-breaking Athlon chip in 1999, which beat Intel to the 1 GHz milestone.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, AMD shaped computing history by introducing x86-64 (AMD64) architecture in 2003, which became the standard 64-bit extension used across modern personal computers and server operating systems. In 2006, AMD acquired graphics pioneer ATI Technologies, giving birth to the Radeon graphics processor line and enabling integrated APUs (Accelerated Processing Units). Despite financial struggles in the late 2000s, AMD spun off its manufacturing arm into GlobalFoundries in 2009, transitioning to a highly efficient fabless semiconductor model.

Under the leadership of CEO Dr. Lisa Su starting in 2014, AMD achieved one of the most remarkable corporate turnarounds in tech history. The introduction of the modular 'Zen' CPU architecture in 2017 powered Ryzen desktop processors and EPYC server CPUs, radically shifting market share back in AMD's favor. With the acquisition of Xilinx in 2022 and Pensando, AMD expanded its footprint into adaptive computing and high-performance data center solutions, cementing its status as a titan in modern computing and AI hardware.
