About & History of Sony

Sony was founded on May 7, 1946, as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation) by engineer Masaru Ibuka and physicist Akio Morita in post-war Tokyo. Starting in a bombed-out department store building with radio repairs and early research into tape recording, the company built Japan's first tape recorder, the Type-G, in 1950. Recognizing the potential of miniaturization, the founders licensed Bell Labs' transistor technology to produce Japan's first transistor radio, the TR-55, in 1955. In 1958, the company adopted the name 'Sony'—a blend of the Latin word 'sonus' (sound) and the mid-century American colloquialism 'sonny boy'—establishing a forward-looking, international identity.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Sony cemented its reputation as a global consumer electronics pioneer through relentless innovation and elegant industrial design. The company introduced the Trinitron color television in 1968, setting a high standard for display quality for decades. In 1979, Sony revolutionized global listening habits by launching the Walkman TPS-L2, creating the personal portable audio category. The company also co-developed the Compact Disc (CD) with Philips in 1982 and pioneered video formats such as Betamax and Video8. In 1994, Sony dramatically disrupted the gaming industry with the debut of the PlayStation, which went on to become one of the most successful media franchises and gaming ecosystems in history.

In the 21st century, Sony transitioned from a traditional consumer electronics manufacturer into a diversified entertainment, media, and technology conglomerate. Today, operating as Sony Group Corporation, the company is a market leader in video games through Sony Interactive Entertainment, recorded music via Sony Music, cinematic production through Sony Pictures Entertainment, and imaging technology through its class-leading CMOS sensors that power the majority of modern smartphone cameras. Sony's heritage continues to reflect a blend of Japanese precision engineering, design aesthetics, and dominant cultural entertainment.
