P-80 Shooting Star was a first-generation, single-engine, turbojet fighter aircraft built by Lockheed Corporation for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). Originally designed as a lightweight day fighter, the P-80 was rushed into production to meet the demands of World War II, and entered service in 1944. Although it arrived too late to see combat in the European theater, the P-80 did see limited action in the Pacific theater. The P-80 was the first jet fighter to be used operationally by the USAAF, and the first jet aircraft to exceed 500 mph (805 km/h) in level flight. It remained in service until 1950, when it was replaced by the more advanced North American F-86 Sabre.
